On September 4, 2024, the annual Convocation Ceremony at ÌìÃÀÓ°Ôº marked the official beginning of the academic year and offered a special welcome to the incoming freshman class. Held on the beautiful President’s Lawn on Kaletsch Campus, this meaningful event celebrates both tradition and new beginnings, as students, faculty, and staff gather to inaugurate the academic journey ahead.

Dean of Academic Affairs,ÌýDavid Mills, presented the ceremony andÌýrecalled his first introduction to Franklin during last year's convocation, marking the start of his own journey with the university.

This year’s Convocation was particularly significant, as it marked the beginning ofÌýFranklin’s 55th year—a milestone highlighted by President Samuel Martín-Barbero in his speech. He reflected on the university’s rich history, its commitment to academic excellence, and the importance of this anniversary for the entire Franklin community. Special remarks were also given by the new SGA President, Allie Schoepke.

The event also served as an opportunity to introduce a new member of the faculty,ÌýProfessor Heidi Toivonen, who joined as the Nora McNeely Hurley Assistant Professor of Psychology. Additionally,ÌýProfessor Vera DianovaÌýof the Business and Economics department was celebrated for her hire in the ranks of the full-time Faculty with the title of Assistant Professor of Economics, acknowledging her outstanding contributions to the university.

The speech of the Dean

Dean of Academic Affairs, David Mills, delivered a reflective and thought-provoking address during the Convocation Ceremony, urging both students and faculty to embrace the creative process and the challenges of growth. He began by humorously revealing that the opening lines of his speech had been written by AI, pointing out how easily one could rely on clichés and patterns. However, Dean Dave stressed that the true value of the creative process lies in doing the difficult, thoughtful work that leads to genuine growth—something that cannot be achieved through shortcuts.

Drawing from his own experiences, Dean Dave highlighted the importance of revision, reflection, and resilience, emphasizing that success comes not from quick solutions but from embracing challenges, overcoming limitations, and developing new capacities. He encouraged students to resist the temptation of relying on AI or mechanical tools for rote tasks, reminding them that these tools should not replace the hard work of learning and self-discovery.

For faculty, Dean Dave called on them to continue growing as educators, guiding students through complex and meaningful work. Quoting both literary figures and poets, he concluded by challenging the Franklin community to "love the work" and to pursue the deep, enriching processes that ultimately shape individuals and contribute to a better society.
